Setting a foundation at the intersection of faith and mobile technology

Image: MMM logo

How do churches, mission groups, organizations, communities, parents, and people respond to life when their use of mobile technology intersects with their faith? Here, we not just ask that question, but present the foundations for answering it. Read more about Mobile Ministry Magazine (MMM) and its mission/vision.

Carnival of the Mobilists #208, Moving Forward

Image: QR Code of Carnival of the Mobilists #208, Moving Forward

A bit late with the posting here, but still wanted to share that the Carnival of the Mobilists has been published this week over at my personal website. This week's Carnival is bittersweet as its the last week that the Nokia Mobile Web Server (MWS) service will be operational. Nokia is shutting down the service as the beta/research project has ended (I'll be moving some posts to a temp WordPress location). Eventually, I'll figure out something really cool to move past the MWS in terms of connectivity and information - I think such mobility spoiled me a lot.

Nevertheless, that doesn't mean that I've got more time to write/research/consult under the guise of MMM (would be nice). It does give me a sharper target when those actions do occur. There are some pretty sizable updates to MMM come the 5th year anniversary of the site in April; so the planning and focus with not having an additional site on the queue does help - and sting. Given all the other ways that we can connect and assimilate information, the mobile web server was a good bit of personal deliverance (content not locked to a 3rd party that I didn't control or have direct management over anything except the production of content) and enablement (lots of connections because of doing the MWS). Looking forward to what's next, it should make for a great story ;)

Carnival of the Mobilists #182 - This One is Personal

Image: QR Code of Carnival of the Mobilists #182 - This One is Personal

I think that here's a good place to let out some of the emotions that I am feeling right now. I think that its ok to do that here.

For years now, I've been really, really passionate about mobile technology. It nearly ruined a past relationship, and I know that its fostered a thousand (literally) friendships that wouldn't have otherwise happened. What I've gained from God since being near mobile devices has been incredible.

A few minutes ago, I posted the 182nd Carnival of the Mobilists on my personal website. And while I want to kind of toot a horn about it; I'm actually sitting here crying because I want to share this one with my dad.

You see, it was about a decade ago when I tore my ACL and was stuck at home in the middle of the summer after surgery without much to do. I had been learning Flash and some web design on my own, but was at the point where my computer just wasn't cutting it. It heated the room better than it was a design tool. My father, being the fiscally responsible man that he was would not agree to spending $800 on a custom computer without a compelling reason. So I designed my first Flash-based websites to prove to him that I needed better tools. He agreed.

When he passed in a car accident the next summer, I was given the funds for my first PDA. Suffice to say, I've been rolling from there. Mobile has one part been therapeutic, and another part just keeping to my word - that I could do better when I have the right tools.

Today, the Carnival is featured on a website that's being hosted on my mobile phone - the mobile phone won after doing an experiment here last year. I truly believe that in hosting this Carnival, that I do my dad's memory the utmost respect, and that I finally come thru with making something that he could be very proud of.

So dad, this Carnival is for you investing in me. I hope that the legacy that you've implanted in me will help others to see what happens when someone invests in their lives.

I really hope that you all read the carnival this week and enjoy it. And if all you do is make it to this point in this post and don't even want to read it; just know that what you are witnesses of is the real effect of mobile technology and faith intersecting - a legacy of innovation and honor that sounds like a son for his father.

Carnival of the Mobilists #181 and Programming Slowing

Image: QR Code of Carnival of the Mobilists #181 and Programming Slowing

Two notes to start off this week after the (USA) Independence Day holiday.

The first being that the 181st Carnival of the Mobilists has been published over at London Calling. Nicely themed with a Wimbledon touch for this week's postings.

Second note is that this week will have limited posting on my side here. I'm getting ready to host the Carnival next week, and have (weirdly enough) just encountered an issue with my main mobile phone. Therefore, I'm spending the time to get things ready to go there. Don't worry though, there may be some other posts here by other contributors. Its a mobile-enabled week all around. So don't forget that closet (Matt 6) time ;)

There's only two weeks until I (personally) host the Carnival of the Mobilists over at my personal website. I wasn't thinking about it until this morning, and now I'm nervous.

Carnival of the Mobilists, Thoughts on Mobile

Image: QR Code of Carnival of the Mobilists, Thoughts on Mobile

Two things of note since this is pretty much a light posting day.

First is to let you know of the 177th Carnival of the Mobilists. As usual, there are a smattering of pieces by mobile-oriented bloggers from all over. I've got a piece in this week's postings as well, though I'll warn you that it might offend a bit ;)

Then there are these thoughts/actions on mobile that I'm pondering in my head: for instance, my church is small, and we have a few college students home for the summer. There aren't many things to do towards keeping them occupied, and so I wanted to do a bit of Friday night fellowships. However, being so SMS/mobile-oriented, I'm debating on the best usages of a service like Church Texting Manager to make it happen best and keep it in a position where others can just find out about it on a whim.

Then I have some thoughts about how to handle some of the requests from friends and family towards helping them to attain a solid mobile device. Now personally, I simply go to Craigslist and find a good deal. But really, who has the time for that. Maybe something like the MMM Smartphone Guide can be done in a smaller, more search-friendly format that would make it easier for people to not just shop, but purchase devices on their own effectively.

I'm also wondering if MMM can include those who bike. You know? Just keeping it mobile ;) hehehe.

Interview with Tomi Ahonen, Author of Mobile as 7th of the Mass Media

Image: QR Code of Interview with Tomi Ahonen, Author of Mobile as 7th of the Mass Media
Image: QR Code of Interview with Tomi Ahonen, via Kaywa

Posted also via this week's Carnival of the Mobilists, I've recently published an interview of Interview with Tomi Ahonen. He is the author of the book Mobile as 7th of the Mass Media and a 2009 Mobile-Fact Almanac. Here's a snippet of the interview:

The internet has legitimately been the biggest disruptive effect to all of global industry and business in the last two decades. And the internet will cause MORE changes in the next ten years than the last 20 years. So far more is yet to come. Now consider mobile. The first downloadable content for mobile phones was sold just over ten years ago, in the autumn of 1998, when in Finland some little company named Saunalahti (now part of the Elisa group) decided to sell this little things they called ringing tones. The ringing tone business rapidly became a 5 billion dollar global industry. But that one idea spawned a mobile content and data services industry in only ten years, that is now worth.. 200 billion dollars. The mobile "internet" and data industry, including SMS text messaging and premium messaging like voting on American Idol, etc, has grown to be rougly as big as the total internet industry, in only half the time. This to me, suggests that the mobile data opportunity is far less understood than the internet. It is also a more dynamic opportunity (if that is even possible) and about to grow to become bigger than the internet, in about only half the time. Mobile is difficult and complex, but it is a huge opportunity and it is a major cannibalization threat, even more so than the internet was. Any industry and business will ignore mobile at its own peril.

Read the rest of the interview at my personal website. The interview and book contributed greatly to the MMM BibleTech presentation.

Tablet Updates, Mobiles, and Notes

Image: QR Code of Tablet Updates, Mobiles, and Notes
Image: HTC Diamond, via Brighthand

I don't want to fall behind too much in some of the current news as there is a slew of things going on these days that would be of interest to many of you looking at mobile devices, web services, and in general those things on tap for the side of tech called mobile.

  • Evernote has left the beta stage and now has a few options for those looking for a solid note solution that can be done on several types of mobile devices, with and without inking/natural handwriting support. There's a free version as well as a pay version that offers a slew of options (via JK on the Run).
  • An interview posted recently at the Adaptive Path Blog talks about an effort going on at Nokia called Homegrown where mobile devices are being looked at towards not only communication tools, but their impact on social and natural envrionments. Its a really impressive thing this group is doing, and speaks well towards a piece we posted earlier about sustaining the earth with our technology choices.
  • The Nokia Internet Tablet has seen an update to the operating system for the N800 and N810 models. I'm still avidly using mine and despite some issues I run into, its still a genre changing kind of device. This latest update paves the way for several features and a new type of Internet Tablet device. Stay tuned here on that note.
  • Nokia, Palm, and HTC have also introduced several new smartphones hitting all types of budgets.

On Nokia's side, the E71, E66, and N78 all come in as nice lifestyle devices for business and entertainment use. Each of these also has GPS built-in. The N78 comes in a North American 3G compatable mode as well.

Palm has introduced an unlocked Palm Centro - meaning that you can purchase it to be used on GSM carriers without needing a mobile plan to do so.

And HTC has unveiled the HTC Diamond. A very impressive mobile device. Its a lot like the iPhone, a lot like nothing you've ever seen, and powerful as all get out. According to Palmsolo/Matt Miller, the HTC Diamond seems to really look and work nice with Laridian's PocketBible 4.

Any of these mobiles would be suitable for engaging in a mobile lifestyle in my opinion. Do write in if you have had experience with any of these mobiles.
  • Carnival of the Mobilists #129 is packed as usual.
  • Logos Bible Software is doing a Show Us Your Work thing via their blog for those using Logos in notes, sermons, and other applications.

Pretty neat if you ask me. Tons out there on the mobile side of life just waiting to be applied in ways that are innovative and can speak towards meeting the needs of various communities around us if we use them as we are being Spirit-led.

Another Carnival In the Mist

Image: QR Code of Another Carnival In the Mist

I traditionally like to submit MMM to the Carnival of the Mobilists because of the unique perspective on mobile technology that is not always explored in the realm of mobile professionals. In following a link from Digital Sanctuary, I came to the website The Kingdom 2.0 which made note of another carnival, the Christian Technology and Media Carnival, to which MMM should be making semi-frequent, future appearances as well.

However, it will be a bit before MMM is included into the next Christian Technology and Media Carnival, so do take a read of The Kingdom 2.0 posting of the First Edition of this carnival. Several articles on the use of media and the Internet in the Body, and some great thoughts on the worldwide perspective of such endeavors.

To those accustomed to reading the Carnival of the Mobilists, #122 at Xellular Identity is the latest published.

Update/Correction: Apologies, the latest Carnival of the Mobilists is #123 at GoMo News.

I unintentionally tend to sit on some news stories. Hoping to speak about some things when there is an open slot or the chatter on the interwebs isn't so loud about it that it would get lost in the shuffle; some things just get pushed to the back a bit. Here's some of those items that aren't too flaccid in terms of timing, but definitely useful for various applications.

Don't forget that we published MMM Issue 5 earlier this week. Several articles and insights there as well for your own mental scratchpad.

Carnival of the Mobilists
One item of note comes from one of the articles. A person basically talks about how they were able to turn their business card into something that one could receive easily via a text message shortcode. In thinking about this, this would be an ideal way to not only pass a business card, but also other announcements in a mobile-friendly way to nearly anyone on any device.

If you've never used OliveTree's BibleReader, it is an amazing app that is a must have.
