Does Mobile Encourage or Discourage Innovation in Education

One of the topics that has been occurring under the radar of what’s happening in mobile has Ben the idea of education and what that looks like. There are views that we’ve expressed here, but before we dive back into that topic stream, hearing from you would be good.

So, here’s the question:
Does mobile encourage or discourage educational innovation?

As a topic that’s near to the heart and actions of some, I’m sure that this can have a wide range of answers. So, answer with your thoughts and experiences and let’s see what’s out there beyond.

  • Encourage. It makes learning more accessible and hopefully more affordable. Leveraging portable, mobile, computing easier to fit in.

Great stuff. What are your thoughts.

  • I would have to say Encourage. Mobility has allowed me to have access to resources that could fill a library all in the palm of my hand. I can read a verse and then with a couple of clicks or gestures, I can find a definition or another point of view on what that verse is trying to communicate.

  • How does accessibility and availability equal innovation? Or do those prime the ground for innovative effects to happen?

  • I see more educational materials being offered in ways that are accessible on mobile devices. Of course this is just access to the same types of material you could get in a book or on your computer, so it is not truly innovative.

I think we will see innovation when publishers start adding mobile context to their information. Say I want to learn about birds and the tools I use show the birds that are near my location at the top of the list. Or while researching art, I am presented with local artists and works of art that others in the area have researched.
