MOBILE OFFICE

This is an intro article I wrote to get people thinking in terms of solving the "out of office" issues. The follow up which is more in depth will be available in the next issue of MMM.
Enjoy, Jay
MOBILE OFFICE

Pulling out of your parking space, it dawns on you; THE PROPOSAL!
You are already committed in traffic, so driving back to the office is not an option. The office secretary is gone on a long weekend. Late for the meeting that you are on your way to, you frantically try to think of a way to get that proposal out to the prospect!

The story or a variation of it has happened to all of us at some time or another. OK, so most of us don't even have an office secretary but you get the idea. Once you realize that you have forgotten a very important task (whatever it is), it's too late!

Many small fortunes have been spent at seminars and on books for office organization skills, memory enhancement techniques, and other PROFESSIONAL SELF HELP fixes.
If they don't keep the above from happening, you haven't gained a thing!
As a salesperson for both my own media business and as an employee, I know firsthand.

The alternative is to have the ability to take care of the forgotten task when you happen to remember it. This is where mobile office communications comes into play.
As a user and researcher of this new technology for the last two years, I can tell you a lot has changed. A PDA; Personal Digital Assistant, has more power than my first PC, and a Cell Phone is no longer just for making calls. As little as two years ago, both of these devices where necessary to really be effective while you were away from the office. Today, you can do most anything you need to with a Smart Phone.

Where to get started?

Depending on your needs, you may have most everything you need already and not even realize it. My basic $29 Camera Phone allows me to do more than most people can imagine.
These abilities include but are not limited to:

1 take and send a picture
2 read and send email
3 access the Internet (including my favorite tech sites, check on Ebay bids, search Google, get driving directions, check the weather... you get the idea)
4 log in to Yahoo Instant Messenger (and send and receive posts in REAL TIME).
5 listen to Podcasts like ABC News
6 Manage and post to my Blog
7 access documents and files on my home office PC
8 watch MSNBC, Discovery, CSPAN, TLC, ESPN, CNET and MORE!!!!!!

Remember, this is on my $29 camera phone. This is a “nothing special” device.

So, back to our original anecdote, if I where in traffic and realized an undone task, it is accessible from my phone via my mobile Internet service provided by my cellular carrier.
