Common Questions

Believe it or not, I am so much into technology that I sometimes fail to realize that there are devices out there that people really do not know anything about. For example, if you mention PDA or Palm, most people are pretty familiar with the ability of those devices to be calendars and address books. But when you mention they can also be phones, GPS devices, and music players, people just look befuddled (see link). Its not that I can blame them, PDAs advanced quite frequently in the last 6-8 years and in tech speak, they have ran far and ahead of the consumer.

Then, there is that question of how much a PDA can hold. When you look at some of the PDA manufacturer's websites, you will read something like: "holds 8000 contact, 2000 appointments, and 4000 memos." So really, how much is that? I know of only one person that has over 1000 contacts and 2000 appointments in his PDA, and that is becasue he NEVER deletes anything. So what can a PDA hold. Here is a simple equasion to think about. Bibles are 1MB in size. The cheapest new PDAs can hold 6 and a half bibles; the most expensive can hold over 200 bibles. Imagine having 200 bibles on your PDA, that would really let the the cat out of the bible study bag.

Another question concerns the difference between the PDA and the laptop and why choose one over the other. Well, that is based on your needs and workspace requirements. For example, if you are a commuter (on the bus or train 2+ hours a day) and would like to get work done, a PDA would be small enough to pull out and use on the cramped spaces you could encounter. A laptop on the other hand comes in handy when you commonaly go between office and field and need a lager display to share findings with others. Now, if you are like me and visit the occasional conference, commute here and there, and still need to display things to others; a TabletPC might be your cup of tea. Tablet PCs are the size of small laptops, but like PDAs give you the versatility to write on the screen and do other things that maybe pulling a keyboard out for would be too much.

Just a few common questions that come across my desk quite often. I would recommend checking out the links on the right side under Mobile-Focused Links for more information as well as the latest trends in technology. You never know where you might need to digitize for the sake of being more responsive to sharing the Word.
